Treatment of hair loss

Effective treatment of hair loss requires to determine the cause.

• The telogen effluvium may indicate support of deficiency (iron, vitamin B12)
or a thyroid problem, but they often heal without treatment after 3-4 months
(after pregnancy, fever, surgery ...). The telogen effluvium induced by drug intake
(isotretinoin, cholesterol, anticoagulant ...) require whenever possible replacement
 therapy with another molecule.

A Few Facts Regarding Balding Solutions For Men Oklahoma Residents Should Consider

By Jennifer Russell

Many men get affected by receding hairlines majorly because of the normal physiological aging process that occurs. Young men with balding usually have a genetic predisposition. Occasionally, receded hairlines may be as a result of long term tight braiding among men who like to braid their hair. Even though some men may be okay with their new look, some are not comfortable with it because their facial features do not go well with the bald. In this article, we discuss balding solutions for men Oklahoma residents may find useful.

Miniaturization is the scientific process behind baldness. In miniaturization, the hair undergoes shrinkage every time it is acted upon by specific hormones. Shrinking results in thinning of hair. Over a long period of time, the hair thins out completely and baldness becomes the outcome. The crown of the head and the front part have a high genetic predisposition to hormone sensitivity. The hormone behind miniaturization is dihydrotestosterone, DHT. Dihydrotestosterone comes from testosterone hormone through action of the enzyme alpha reductase.

Minoxidil, a drug initially used as primary treatment for high blood pressure, now also has some positive effects on hair growth. This was accidentally discovered when hypertensive patients on minoxidil started growing hair in unintended places. This side effect became a blessing in disguise.

While something may be meat to one person, it may be poison to another. In this case, minoxidil became meat to people suffering from alopecia. When applied topically on the balding area, hair growth becomes renewed. It works by enhancing the flow of blood to the affected area. It is however paramount that application is done periodically to keep the follicles nourished and active. It is only a temporary measure as it does not act on the root cause of this problem.

Finasteride is the other drug that is of benefit to men with alopecia (hair loss). It is primarily used for reducing the size of an abnormally large prostate. It works by inhibiting the enzyme five alpha reductase type two. This in turn results in a reduction in the amount of dihydrotestosterone and therefore minimal damage to hair follicles.

Finasteride needs to be used judiciously just like in the case of minoxidil to ensure sustained hair growth. Discontinuation leads to more DHT being produced which binds on the hair follicles and causes them to shrink. The drug should also be started in the early stages of hair loss if good results are to be seen.

Perhaps a more permanent way of dealing with alopecia is hair transplantation. This is done surgically under local or general anaesthesia depending on how severe the baldness. Some of the good hairs at the back of the head are harvested and transferred to the front where the follicles have been damage. The new follicles ultimately regenerate new hair strands and hence hair becomes uniformly distributed throughout the head.

Hair at the back of the head is the most preferred as the donor site of follicles since it is the most repulsive to damage by dihydrotestosterone. The harvested follicles are transferred to the bald areas, replacing those that have already been damaged. At the end of the day, good hair distribution on the entire head becomes restored and the client gets to have their desired look.
